2023-05-26 Standley Chasm
The travelling 3-ship departed Ellery Gorge this morning and headed towards Standley Chasm. It wasn’t too far and we had arrived by around 1030 where the coffee connoisseurs (Bob and Kieran) got to rank the latte and flat white – apparently far superior than the lowest rated at Wilcannia. A short hike to the chasm where the wind was absolutely bitter, but it was definitely worth the discomfort.
The others went on an extra hike while Bob and I stayed to watch the changing light in the chasm as the sun went overhead. We then met back at the cafe for some lunch before saying goodbye to Jase and Sue for a few days while they head east for more hikes and some mountain biking.
We then headed for our next stop at Palm Valley, which involved travelling along the Finke River bed. Bob has got this 4wding thing really happening now!
The campground here is so lovely. Green grass overlooking the waterhole and an abundance of bird life. Thanks once again to Matt for the heads up about heading here. Tomorrow we will head to the palms and get the historical significance of them. Tonight, we just have to make do with yet another fire….
It is meant to get down to freezing overnight – the diesel heater will definitely be getting a run.

Loving all your photos and the commentary. Amazing how the temperatures change so much.
Thanks Sandra. Yes, we are going from too hot to hike, to frosts all within a few days at the moment.
