2023-07-04 Bouncing back to Broome

Swag night number 3 for this trip and for a non-camper I am doing ok! Another mild night and we could leave the canvas rolled back and watch the moon-lit night sky. A lovely colourful sunrise this morning and we watched it through the gauze of the swag.

Karen put us to shame though, and was out exploring as the sun came up. This shot she took shows both our setups on the ledge.

After brekky we started our pack up when just in front of our camp we saw a small shark thrashing around catching some food. A fisherman had been in that spot literally 10 minutes earlier!

We headed south in both our cars exploring any side roads along the way. We went further in to James Price Point, then Quondong Point where the clay cliffs weren’t as pronounced but the sand was white and the water inviting…. A failed attempt at finding some dinosaur footprints and then off to Willie Point pearling farm for lunch. The main road into here was closed due to the rain last week so it was a fun 8km 4wd track in with pull over spots when oncoming traffic arrived.

We said goodbye to Karen and Kieran again, and they headed back to Quondong Point to retrace the path to the dinosaur footprints after some research at lunch. This time they were successful and we got and excited message this afternoon with the details 🙂 . We did a boomerang impersonation and headed back to Broome for the third time in the last week and a half.

Tonight was another bucket list ticker for me. We headed in to the Mangrove Hotel by 5pm for the moon event at 620. The crowds were absolutely crazy! So many people are in holding pattern in Broome at the moment with both the Fitzroy Crossing and Gibb River Road closed – the only way to Darwin at the moment is via the Nullarbor Plain!!! The Staircase to the Moon at the hotel was an audio experience as well as a visual one. Live modern didgeridoo music played as the lights were dimmed. I would rank this with experiencing sunset watching over Uluru!

We stayed and listened to more music before heading back to the van. When we arrived we were greeted with what sounded like fireworks…..turns out the Pistol Club where we are staying has club night on Tuesdays 🙂 .

Another fun day. We are in Broome until Friday. Karen and Kieran are staying remote and will join us on Thursday.
