2023-07-19 Mitchell Falls NP
A few days ago I didn’t think we’d be making the trip to Mitchell Falls after the Gibb was closed for a week. The road up here is notoriously the worst road in the Kimberley and causes grief for many vehicles. Not only did it open, but it has been graded! So it is far from the worst road we have travelled on this trip. The corrugations are still terrible and I’m not volunteering to go on a gravel road when we get home for a year! To go with the 3 uhf whip aerials we have snapped, the antenna mount decided to vibrate loose (for the second time) today. Better than a wheel coming off I suppose 🙂 .

We arrived at the national park campground for lunch and set up the tent and swag. Feeling like I’m getting good at this gig!

The day was warmer than they have been of recent times (possibly as we have moved around 150km north today), so this afternoon we walked to the Little Merten Falls. When we arrived at the top of the falls there were lots of rock plunge pools with rapids flowing through them. We sat in various pools and allowed the rapids to pummel our tired muscles. It was particularly good physio for Bob’s tight post-surgery leg muscles.

We then started moving to the bottom of the falls. On the way we saw one of the most impressive aboriginal rock art displays. There was an abundance of art spread along a long overhang. The display is categorised as part of the Western Australian Museum.

We spent some time behind the falls (which weren’t running particularly strongly) before hitting the bottom where Karen and I jumped in for a swim before our climb back out.

We were back by sunset where we have packed for our hike to Mitchell Falls tomorrow and are now sitting in front of the fire. We are planning an early start tomorrow to maximise our time at the falls.

We are doing so much reminiscing.
Good thing the road was graded for you.
Thanks Michelle. We are having a ball. The time is going so quickly. I remember you guys going to many of these places.
