2023-05-09 Muloorina Station
Today was another travel day. We had a casual 320km drive stopping at any sight seeing opportunities and any little towns we passed through. First stop was The Great Wall of China – a ridge that resembles the real wall, followed by Blinman where the boys grabbed a coffee. We then drove through Parachilna Gorge and departed the Flinders.
We called in to Leigh Creek which is a town built to support the mines feeding the power stations that no longer exist. Other than the shop assistants, the town seemed completely deserted. Following a lunch stop, we drove to Marree and filled up with petrol before heading to our camp for the night. A new record for diesel – $2.80/L. Kieran was shocked but we all assured him it will get worse from here…
After we left Marree, we followed a 50km dirt road to get to the Muloorina Station. which is a 400,000 hectare property running 4000 cattle. If I can actually manage to get the website menus operating again tonight I will update the progress map to show where we are 🙂
We are camped at a a beautiful little waterhole teeming with birds and wildlife. Hot springs are a short walk away (which we plan to have a swim in tomorrow), and it really feels like we are the only people on the planet. Thanks to Matt from work for the recommendation for this beautiful place.
Unfortunately the road to access Lake Eyre is closed from here at the moment (which we were looking forward to) so we will be forced endure a slowing of pace over the next couple of days before we continue on. I think we’ll manage.

I’m glad you made it there, it’s a great spot. Let me know if you find one of the boys monster trucks in the mud. The Simpson has finally started to flood now and would be awesome to see from the air. Not sure how far flights from William Creek or Oodnadatta go. Could be worth investigating.
The trip is looking great.
The flights from Marree are taking in the Simpson under flood as well as the lakes. Most of the road access points to the lakes are closed as well to to the water arriving in the system. I think by air will be our only option to see them.
We are having a ball!
