2023-08-28 Glass House Mountains

Bob and I took off early this morning to hike to the summit of Mt Ngungun while the morning light was good. It was a decent climb of nearly 200m over about 1.2km. The view of the volcanic plugs was worth the effort. We were done by 9am so headed into Mooloolaba for a look around and a reminisce of our last trip there 22 years ago. It has changed a lot! While we were out playing on the south…

2023-08-27 A Whale of a Time

Today we were mugged! By whales. The whale watching cruise was amazing! Jason and Sue made a late night decision and came along on the tour with us. Lots of baby whales fattening up in the bay and learning their behaviours from Mum. We saw a 1.5 week old learning to breach but mostly just belly flopping 🙂 . Then the mugging happened. 4 large whales just hung around the boat and kept swimming under it for about 45 minutes….

2023-08-26 K’Gari (Fraser Island)

Today was massive! We did our own things and Kieran started the day with Park Run. The Scott’s headed to the markets this morning and spent this afternoon on a whale watching cruise which they really enjoyed, particularly the pod of mothers and calves that put on a display for them. Bob and I were off on our day by 715 – bus, then ferry, then bus again on K’gari. The sandy ‘roads’ across the island were insane and we…

This morning we arranged to go for a bike ride along the Esplanade and have brekky along the way. We left at 730 and spent then next few hours riding, exploring and eating. We rode the 1 km long Urangan Pier and were back after 34km of riding in time for lunch at the vans. After lunch, the Scott’s hit the shops, Bob hit the sack and I hit the sand and hiked a couple of km to a lovely…

Today we took a ridiculously long time to go only 220km! We didn’t hurry this morning and were on the road by 9. We made it to Bundaberg around 11am and headed straight to the rum distillery where we went through the museum and booked a tour. The tour came with a few rum samples and despite the various options, I am still not a rum fan. The closest I got to liking it was the salted caramel dessert rum…

2023-08-23 Larc Paradise Tour

Today was a very full day! We headed off this morning to the approximately 60km Larc tour of the coastline up to Bustard Point Lighthouse. After a slight hiccough to proceedings we were on our way. We have seen an abundance of birdlife, a turtle, a whale, a stingray, a sea snake, and dolphins all in the ridiculously clear water. The amphibious Larc was a very cool way to get around on both the sand and water crossings. After morning…

2023-08-22 Bi (or Tri) Athlon Day

We didn’t have any set plans for today. The Scott’s started the day with a bike ride before we were even up. After a relaxed brekky we all headed out for a 5.5km walk along the beach towards Agnes Water and back on the cycleway. Some really cool driftwood along the beach. We came back and I started chipping away at getting the red dust off the outside van seals so we can sell it as soon as we get…

I still think the name of this town is weird. Who has a number as their town name? Although I do understand it’s significance….. Today was a bit of travel and a bit of exploring. We moved about 270km down the road and there wasn’t a lot to see other than along the river for brekky at Rockhampton. We have set up at our sites at 1770 (it’s easier to write it this way, even though it’s wrong) and have…

2023-08-20 Down Day

Today was a very relaxing Sunday. We all had a slow start and then Bob and I started our day’s activities and never got more than 5km from the van. The Scott’s headed further afield. We hiked to the top of Bluff Point, kayaked in Causeway lake, relaxed in the hammock, and enjoyed a sunset 7km walk along Shoal Bay. Karen and Kieran headed to Capricorn Caves about 50km up the road before spending some time canoeing in Byfield National…

2023-08-19 Emu Park

Well, here we are 16 weeks since we left on our trip, and our last 4 weekly update before we are back home in 2 weeks. We have travelled 17,020 km, spent 5 nights in a swag and 79 nights living off our battery system. Even though we are now back in civilisation, demand for sites means we are missing out on connecting to power more often than not. Mintie supplies are back on track, however we have become connoiseurs…
