2023-05-21 Rim Walk
What an absolutely amazing day! Every one of us was gob smacked by the scenery that we saw today.
We woke to the unfortunate news that our booking at the Bungle Bungle caravan park had been cancelled as they are not opening for the dry season due to problems negotiating non-pastoral lease arrangements with the traditional landowners. In addition to staying there, we had planned to store our vans while spending a few nights in Purnilulu National Park. A big set back – the Bungle Bungles was a big drawcard for our WA itinerary. After a frantic morning we managed to lock in an alternate camp site which we plan to utilise to leave our van at while swagging it in the national park. Hoping it will be secure enough…
Back to the hiking today…all 6 of us set off on the 6.7km Rim Walk by 930am. The start involved a ridiculous rock climb to get to the rim, but once we were there it wasn’t too extreme. My Strava stats show how strenuous the climb was!
Today is another case of photos not showing the scale, beauty and diversity of the landscape we traversed.

We took a diversion from the main track and had lunch at the Garden of Eden. A beautiful spot with plants, waterholes and beautiful rock formations at the base of the rim.

We traversed the second side of the rim after lunch with more amazing landscapes to absorb.

Bob was a trooper and made it the whole way around, but wasn’t up for the second 2.5km Kings Creek hike once we’d completed the rim. He headed back to camp to take on domestic duties and get some clothes washed while the rest of us hiked on.

Thoroughly in awe of what we all experienced today, we headed back to camp, where we enjoyed a beverage at happy hour at the tavern. This was followed by a repeat performance at the outdoor sunset bar where we enjoyed music and chatted with other travellers.
Tomorrow we move on from Kings Canyon and say goodbye to Jason and Sue for a couple of days as they are not able to travel the gravel roads to our next stop on the itinerary.

Great photos, certainly is an amazing place
Those sheer cliffs are amazing. Looks like they’ve been cut off with a huge circular saw. Linz and I did this walk in 2018 but in 1986 Melissa and I did the walk with mum & dad. There were no stairs down to the water hole and we had to work our way down through the crevices.
Wow! That walk would have been a lot more difficult. I’m sure it felt much more secluded back then when you’d done the hard yards to get there.
Scale and diversity might not come thru in photos, but they’ll be a great reminder and memory jogger later on…
Very true 🙂
