We have spent the day today in and around the ghost town of Mary Kathleen. After pulling up in the dark last night after the Matilda’s win, we jumped on our bikes this morning and rode the 18km return to the nearby abandoned uranium mine. The water colour here is incredible. I do wonder what a gieger counter would register here.

We rode back to ‘town’. The township was built by the mining company in the late 1950’s and was completely dismantled in the mid 80’s once mining had ceased. All that is left are slabs from the houses and shops. There are heaps of caravans staying here as it is available to free camp and there is so much space. I went out and tried to recreate some before after shots with photos that I found on the internet.

Town Square monument and water fountain then…and now.

Olympic swimming pool then…..and now.

ANZ bank floor tiles

I found exploring the ghost town really interesting. Last night we camped at the Bowling Club, but today we moved the vans to a suburban street for some shade.

Later this afternoon I drove back to the mine with the drone to see what the changing light did to the water colour.

and took a comparison shot with the camera too.

I’m really glad we made it here on the trip. It’s been on my list since we did a trip to Qld 2 years ago, but it was too far away from our travel route.

This evening is a camp fire and earlyish dinner. Even though we are back on NSW time the sun still sets quite late here. Tomorrow is another travel day as we head to Winton.

  1. Fabulous before and after photos of the pool – what an interesting place!
That blue colour in the crater looks so unbelievable!

    1. It’s actually sort of hard to believe! Yes it was weird thinking I was standing where people had been swimming all those years ago.
