2023-05-07 Wilpena Pound
Another very chilly start this morning. Karen and Kieran had some maintenance on their car drawers so Bob and I set off on our planned hike as we expected to be much slower than them. Bob’s leg is continuing to behave and we did quite a bit of climbing on today’s walk which is very comforting.

After an unfortunate incident where I managed to drop my phone off the bridge we were crossing and it settled at the bottom of the water, it was successfully retrieved and I was very thankful that the phone was upgraded to a waterproof one in the weeks before we came away. Clumsy Kerri in form!
Our first stop on the hike was at the Hill Homestead – this is the second house built in the pound by the Hill family who semi-successfully managed to grow wheat in Wilpena Pound. Drought and floods eventually proved too much and they left the area.

We then traversed a significant climb along the rocky path to the Wangara lookout. Definitely worth the effort to see Wilpena Pound from up high.

We walked back to camp with a lunch stop along the way. All up a very successful 9km hike for Bob to notch up.
This afternoon we headed out in the car to explore the Bunyeroo Gorge and Brachina Gorge systems. Some spectacular rock strata formations and great lookouts were dotted along the way.
Karen and Kieran decided to head out for even more exercise (biking and running) while we were exploring the gorges. They found the old station and the remaining buildings and plenty of wildlife on their trek.
Tonight we all got ourselves organised for a camp oven dinner on the fire. Very yummy!

Tomorrow is another early start as we are all going on the Sky Trek 4WD tour (thanks Jamie and Corinne for the suggestion). Kieran is very excited and Bob is a little apprehensive but keen to give it a go.
Tonight is meant to get down to 3 degrees with a top tomorrow of 13 degrees. We will appreciate warmer temperatures as we start heading further north.
