2023-05-08 Skytrek
Wow! What a day…
We were up and out of camp by 730 this morning, heading for a full day of 4WDing at Skytrek on the Willow Springs Station. We (Bob and I) were keen to try but also a little apprehensive as we’ve never really done any real off road driving before. Karen and (especially) Kieran were up for it the second the option was mentioned.
We were off on the 80km circuit just after 8am, and the early morning light was still so magical. Took heaps of photos but somehow they just don’t represent the views. We traversed gorges, springs, river bed after river bed and multiple lookouts over the course of the day. The geological diversity was mind blowing, and the lurching, rock traversing, steep climbs and low ratio 4WD crawling along worth it for the amazing scenery and experience of the day.

I decided it would be worth it to put the drone up and try to video the scenery and our 4WDing. Big fail! Reminder to learn how to use video before attempting something like this. After years of photographing from the drone I discovered that the silly thing won’t go very far from it’s ‘home’ location (where it started from) and I was reduced to walking back to land and retrieve it. More learning required…

Too many lovely outlooks to describe. End result was that Kieran was in his element, Bob survived it (and even enjoyed parts of it), Karen got control of the steering wheel for a while and Kerri was more than content sitting in the passenger’s seat with the camera in her hand.

Overall impression is that is was an amazing day – we (the Mitcho’s) learned a lot about handling our car in very off road conditions. The Scott’s enjoyed the adventure as they’ve done ‘real’ 4WDing before. But I’m glad we aren’t doing it again tomorrow 🙂

Back to camp and a quick dinner before heading over to the restaurant to enjoy their amazing fire pit and a beverage and dessert. Tomorrow we depart the Flinders and head towards Lake Eyre.

What an amazing adventure. Photos are great – so I can’t imagine just how fabulous it was in the real. The tour is off to a wonderful start. So many experiences already. We’re loving following along. Xoxo
Can’t believe we’ve been gone a week already. This will be you in a fortnight! It’s definitely living up to our dream 🙂
Makes our road trip (Melbourne – Wagga Wagga – Newcastle – Burleigh Heads – Buderim – Port Macquarie – Goulburn – Melbourne) look pathetic!! Enjoying the updates. Stay safe and enjoy!!
Thanks. It’s not difficult to enjoy. It is certainly our biggest road trip
This trip won’t get close to your trip of 2017-18. One day we hope to get around the whole country 🙂 So good to finally be out here after so many years of planning.
Loving reading about your adventures and your photos are great.
Thanks Lynn. We are having a ball.
Incredible landscape. Great photos, keep them coming!
Thanks Trish. Hopefully I’ll get more efficient at these updates as we go.
What an amazing 4wd adventure. It’s definitely less stressful when you’re on an organised tour. Loving the photos and the commentary Kerri.
Thanks Mandy. We are going lots of places you guys did on your lap.
Fabulous photos of the scenery Kerri. They look just like Albert Namatjira’s beautiful landscape paintings. Enjoy the outback.
Thanks Louise. The scenery is stunning.
