2023-07-02 Back to Broome

We were pretty organised this morning and were out of Middle Lagoon by 830. Even with the rain we got on Thursday night we were very impressed with how much the 4wd access road had drained since the drive in – gives us hope for the Gibb.

We re-inflated tyres and continued a short way down the road to Beagle Bay, an Aboriginal community where the Mother of Pearl Catholic Church was set up as part of a mission over 100 years ago. The church, and particularly the altar has been painstakingly and artistically constructed and decorated with locally sourced mother of pearl shells.

We continued south from Beagle Bay and along the way Bob and I reverted from alternate plan 2A back to plan 1A resulting in us saying goodbye to Karen and Kieran at the turnoff to James Price (and offloading our useless generator fuel to them). We decided to head to Broome and potentially camp by the road given the stress on caravan parks and overflow accommodation with the weather and road closures. This was so we could get a head start on sorting our generator and supplementary solar requirements tomorrow. On an off chance we drove past the Pistol Club overflow camp (not bookable, first in best dressed) and jagged the only powered site (possibly in Broome) thanks to someone recently vacating it before we drove in. Happy Days!! 🙂

After lunch we headed out to get some recon in for the shopping expedition tomorrow (and importantly purchasing of some craft projects for me for when our hectic pace slows as it has over the last week), then over to town beach and then the Mangrove Hotel to organise a vantage point for the Staircase to the Moon phenomena that we are now unexpectedly going to be around for on Tuesday night. We had to stop for a beverage at the hotel before moving on again for sunset (as you do…).

Then back to our favourite spot – sunset at the Cable Beach Resort Sunset bar and down onto the beach for the colourful sky. We never get sick of this vista.

Karen and Kieran have safely set up at James Price. We are looking forward to heading up to meet them tomorrow with the swag once we’ve sorted our requirements here.
