2023-07-24 Ellenbrae
Today was a 140km hop back to the Gibb and then head east to Ellenbrae Station for 3 nights. The road was really corrugated and we found the contents of one of our cupboards all over the floor when we arrived – including the camp oven.
On the way, we stopped off at some more aboriginal art. This art did seem to have been touched up recently. Apparently only descendants from the same tribe are able to touch up existing rock art.

Ellenbrae is famous for its’ scones with jam and cream. We didn’t even get as far as setting up the vans before the call went out for scones as we were checking in. I’m not particularly a scone fan, but these were pretty good! (I didn’t get one, but did have a bite of Bob’s). The station sold 22,300 scones last year and based on what we saw today, I reckon they’ll beat that this year.
We then set up and had lunch and some craft time before heading out on the bikes to explore. Karen and Kieran took the 4WD bike track while Bob and I checked out the quirky amenities, the swimming waterhole and headed back to the homestead so I could have my own scone 🙂 . We were told that there are freshwater crocs at the waterholes and today just wasn’t warm enough to tempt us in.

Today has been quite windy and much cooler than we are used to (I had the best sleep last night). Tomorrow we plan to have lunch at the homestead as they have volunteered to make a specific vegetarian quiche for me 🙂 .

Was the “donkey” fired up for your hot shower?
The donkey is at the other campsite. We are at ‘the ringer’ which has gas. Karen and Kieran saw them lighting the donkey yesterday on their ride.
